About this tour

By surface area, Victoria is the biggest lake in Africa. It is also the largest tropical lake anywhere and ranks behind only Lake Superior among the world’s freshwater lakes by area. Luo speakers call it Nam Lolwe, while its Luganda name is Nalubaale; communities and ecosystems in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania depend on it.

The lake occupies a broad, shallow depression, averaging about 40 meters deep and reaching roughly 80–84 meters at its deepest points. Its immense shoreline includes bays, wetlands and freshwater margins that can support a varied bird community. Conditions and species differ substantially by access point, season and water level.

The one-day visit focuses on birding from an accessible Kenyan lakeshore area. The specific shoreline circuit follows current local access and weather, allowing time to observe wetland and open-water birds without implying a guaranteed species total. Lake Victoria’s northern shore near Jinja, Uganda, is also where the Nile flows out of the lake.
