About this tour
Lukenya Hills form a roughly 40-square-kilometer rocky ridge above the Athi–Kapiti plains. Nairobi lies about 40 kilometers to the northwest. The flat-topped high ground opens wide views toward surrounding hills and, in clear conditions, the distant peaks of Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro.
The cliffs are important roosting and breeding habitat for vultures, including White-backed and Rüppell’s Vultures. Verreaux’s Eagle is another key possibility, using the rocky outcrops while hunting Rock Hyrax. Birding combines scans of the ridge and sky with observation of the adjoining plains; every raptor sighting depends on weather and activity.
Lukenya is also an important archaeological landscape, with evidence spanning the Middle-to-Later Stone Age transition between about 50,000 and 39,000 years ago. Today the ridge forms part of the wider wildlife dispersal system connected with the Athi–Kapiti plains and Nairobi National Park.
