About this tour

The Sabaki River Estuary covers about 250 hectares where the Athi–Galana–Sabaki system reaches the Indian Ocean. Sandbanks, mudflats, saltmarsh, dunes, mangroves, scrub and seasonal or permanent freshwater pools create a varied coastal birding landscape.

Birding is on foot, with the greatest diversity and numbers generally occurring during the August-to-April migration period. Madagascar Pratincole is a notable March-to-September possibility, while African Skimmer, Broad-billed Sandpiper, Crab Plover, Sooty Gull, Saunders’s Tern and Lesser Crested Tern are among the other targets. Lesser Flamingos may appear when river levels are lower.

Gulls and terns feed offshore and return to roost on exposed sandbanks, so water level and tide strongly influence the experience. The walk follows safe, accessible estuary edges and avoids sensitive roosts. Every species and abundance figure varies with season, tide, rainfall and disturbance.
