About this tour
Saiwa Swamp National Park is reached from the Kapenguria road, roughly 25 kilometers beyond Kitale. Kenya’s smallest national park combines swamp, forest and grassland in a compact protected area originally established for the rare, swamp-dwelling Sitatunga.
No visitor vehicles operate inside the park. Birding is on foot along quiet forest trails and a raised wooden boardwalk that crosses wetland habitat. Four elevated observation hides provide views into the marsh and canopy, creating opportunities for wetland and forest birds as well as Sitatunga and monkeys.
More than 370 bird species have been recorded, and birding is possible year-round. The exact circuit depends on boardwalk and trail access, rainfall and current activity. Sitatunga is shy, and neither the antelope nor any bird species can be guaranteed on a single visit.
