About this tour

Shaba National Reserve covers about 239 square kilometers in northern Kenya. Dry plains, umbrella-thorn acacia, open woodland, springs, swamps and lava outcrops are cut by the Ewaso Nyiro River, with Mount Kenya and Ololokwe forming part of the wider backdrop.

The lava fields are especially important for the range-restricted Williams’s Lark. Mount Modech and Mount Shaba provide vulture roosts, while other possibilities include Vulturine Guineafowl, Somali Bee-eater, Eastern Yellow-billed Hornbill, Boran Cisticola and Donaldson-Smith’s Sparrow-Weaver. Birding is generally most productive in the cooler early morning and late afternoon.

Riverine forest and doum palms support wildlife amid the arid landscape. The region’s northern special five comprises Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich and Grevy’s Zebra. The day’s vehicle route follows current reserve access and heat conditions, and all bird and mammal sightings remain uncertain.
