Tana River Primate Reserve
A private birding day in the lower Tana River forests, exploring riparian woodland and wetlands in habitat shared by two endemic primates.
About this tour
Created in 1976, this lower-Tana reserve is also called Mchelelo and protects surviving riverine forest. Wenje, Kipende and Kimbu are among the lowland evergreen forest areas in a wider mosaic of riparian woodland, grassland, bushland, oxbow lakes, ponds and marshes.
About 71 distinct forest patches occur along the lower river, together covering roughly 3,700 hectares. Sixteen patches lie within the 17,100-hectare reserve, which follows approximately 36 kilometers of the Tana’s course. Birding samples accessible forest and wetland edges on both sides of this complex floodplain.
The reserve is especially important for Tana River Red Colobus and Tana River Crested Mangabey, two endangered primates endemic to the lower-Tana forest patches. The climate is generally hot and dry, with the highest temperatures usually in January and February. Route choice depends on river conditions, access and local guidance, and neither primates nor birds are guaranteed.
