Cross New Zealand from Auckland to Invercargill on a 14-day small-group journey combining endemic-rich forests, estuaries, islands and pelagic birding.
About this tour
This 14-day journey connects many of New Zealand’s distinctive bird communities on a southbound route from Auckland to Invercargill. North Island reserves, estuaries and mature forest lead into South Island coasts, inland landscapes and Stewart Island, giving a compact introduction to all three main island groups.
Expected route elements include Tiritiri Matangi, Miranda, the Central Plateau, Pureora Forest and Manawatu Estuary before the journey continues toward Kaikoura, Central Otago and Stewart Island. Land-based searches are complemented by boat travel and pelagic opportunities, including a half-day offshore component around Stewart Island when conditions allow.
The birding emphasis is on representatives of New Zealand’s six endemic families—kiwi, parrots, wrens, wattlebirds, creepers and Stitchbird—along with Wrybill, New Zealand Pigeon, Yellowhead and a broad seabird community. The itinerary is low impact but requires at least low-to-moderate fitness, including the ability to walk for an hour or more over undulating ground without significant assistance. Departures generally operate from October through March; exact availability and all commercial arrangements are confirmed on request.

Itinerary
Day 1
Auckland and northern reserves
Begin in Auckland and visit selected northern birding areas, potentially including the island sanctuary of Tiritiri Matangi and shorebird habitat around Miranda. The exact order responds to access, weather and current bird activity.
Day 5
Central North Island forest and estuary habitats
Continue through the Central Plateau and the mature native forest of Pureora, then add wetland and estuarine birding around Manawatu. Searches focus on the endemic forest families and locally productive feeding or roosting sites.
Day 9
Kaikoura and the South Island
Cross to the South Island and work south through selected habitats, with Kaikoura adding an important seabird component. Land-based stops and boat opportunities are arranged around conditions before the route reaches Central Otago.
Day 13
Stewart Island and Invercargill
Conclude with Stewart Island forest birding and a half-day pelagic opportunity when sea conditions permit. Return to the mainland for the finish in Invercargill.
