Undertake a twelve-day private expedition across Paraguay’s Humid and Dry Chaco, Pantanal wetlands and remote Cerrado, with birding at each major habitat transition.
About this tour
This is Wildlife Paraguay’s broadest birding and wildlife circuit, moving from the Humid Chaco into saline-lagoon country, the northern Pantanal, remote Cerrado and the interior of the Dry Chaco. The twelve days balance long overland transfers with repeated field sessions in very different ecosystems.
Named stages include Laguna Capitan, Bahia Negra and Tres Gigantes, Cerro Chovoreca, Defensores del Chaco, Teniente Enciso, Medanos del Chaco and Neuland. The operator suggests roughly 230–320 bird species may be encountered, alongside strong mammal and nature-photography opportunities. Remote access, flooded roads, heat and seasonal conditions can materially change the route.
The production price starts at USD 2,500 for one guest, while the final total depends on the confirmed arrangement. May through October is recommended generally for Chaco/Pantanal travel. Day 1
Humid Chaco to Laguna Capitan
Work the Benjamin Aceval area for Humid Chaco birds, then continue north and west to Laguna Capitan.
Day 2
Dry Chaco lagoons
Search saline waters and nearby dry woodland for flamingos, waders, ducks and Chaco specialists.
Day 3
Journey toward the Pantanal
Travel through seasonally flooded roads and wetland landscapes toward Bahia Negra, stopping to bird wherever access permits.
Day 4
Tres Gigantes
Use trails and boat access around Tres Gigantes for Pantanal forest birds, waterbirds and wider wetland wildlife.
Day 5
Bahia Negra to Cerro Chovoreca
Leave the Pantanal sector and bird remote transition habitats while travelling to Cerro Chovoreca.
Day 6
Cerro Chovoreca Cerrado
Walk sub-humid Cerrado forest trails for guans, curassows, potoos, motmots, macaws, antbirds, spinetails and related regional birds.
Day 7
Toward Defensores del Chaco
Continue morning fieldwork at Cerro Chovoreca, then transfer into Defensores del Chaco National Park.
Day 8
Defensores del Chaco
Search the national park for crested tinamous, Black-legged Seriema, Black-bodied Woodpecker and other endemic birds, adding a Chaco Owl attempt after dark.
Day 9
Teniente Enciso
Continue through Dry Chaco roads and trails around Teniente Enciso National Park, with the exact field route chosen for current conditions.
Day 10
Medanos del Chaco
Make the excursion to Medanos del Chaco, where the two named priorities are Spot-winged Falconet and Stripe-capped Sparrow, then return to Teniente Enciso.
Day 11
Neuland reserve
Use Teniente Enciso and reserve trails near Neuland for remaining Chaco priorities.
Day 12
Return to Asuncion
Begin the return to Asuncion, adding field stops when road timing and conditions allow.
