About this tour

This small-group nine-day itinerary follows Manu Road from Cusco toward the upper Rio Madre de Dios. The route begins in high-elevation country around Huacarpay and the upper road, then spends a full day at Wayqecha Biological Station. From there it descends through Pillahuata and San Pedro to the forest surrounding Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.

The second half continues downslope through Pillcopata to Manu Biological Station, where two complete days are devoted to lower-elevation forest. This progressive descent connects paramo grassland, elfin forest, cloud forest, subtropical foothills and lowland rainforest. Andean Cock-of-the-Rock is a recurring feature of the route rather than a guaranteed observation, and the published estimate is 350-400 species.

The tour is rated easy, with most birding along the road or on generally manageable trails. Some rolling foothill paths can be moderate, and the Wayqecha stay is around 2,950 meters, where nights may be cold. May through November is the listed period, while rain is possible in any month. The final morning can return to Cusco or connect with a lowlands boat journey. Send an inquiry through BirdWatch to confirm the preferred connection, dates and final pricing.
