Small-Group Tarapoto-Cajamarca Tour
A small-group 14-day northern Peru route from Tarapoto to Cajamarca via Plataforma, Abra Patricia and the Marañón canyons, estimated at 525-575 species.
About this tour
This small-group northern Peru journey starts from Lima and Tarapoto before climbing by four-wheel drive to Plataforma. Field time there focuses on Scarlet-banded Barbet and Plataforma Antbird. Cordillera Escalera and Aconabikh Center follow, after which the itinerary moves west through Quiscarumi Bridge, Waqanki and Arena Blanca.
Abra Patricia provides cloud-forest birding and an evening search for Long-whiskered Owlet. Huembo Center adds Marvelous Spatuletail before the route crosses the Cocahuayco gorge to Cocachimba, Leymebamba and the deep Marañón canyon at Balsas. Celendín and Cajamarca complete the overland section. The estimated total is 525-575 species, with all focal sightings dependent on conditions.
Pace is easy and difficulty easy to moderate; Plataforma, the owlet site and some canyon access can be steep or muddy, and several transfers are long. April through October is the recommended period.
