About this tour

Ria Formosa Natural Park protects a rich enclave on Portugal’s southern coast, preserving a mosaic of pine woodland, Mediterranean scrub, wetlands, natural saltmarsh and dune systems around the barrier islands.

The water and marshes can support many waders and ducks, together with flamingos and seasonal Bee-eaters. Hedges and woodland add Azure-winged Magpie, Iberian Grey Shrike and Golden Oriole, expanding the day beyond strictly coastal species.

The park also carries strong scenic and cultural interest within a heavily visited Algarve coastline. Chameleon or Otter may appear with luck, but the focus throughout the day remains the diverse birdlife created where terrestrial, wetland and coastal habitats meet.

Use a full day to move between the park’s saltmarsh, wetlands, pine woodland, Mediterranean scrub and coastal dune habitats. Focus first on waders, ducks and flamingos, then add hedges and wooded areas for magpies, shrikes, orioles and seasonal Bee-eaters. The sequence follows tides and current bird activity.
