About this tour
This Porto-based outing links northern Portugal’s coastal wetlands and estuary edge. Barrinha de Esmoriz is a roughly 400-hectare coastal lagoon within the Natura 2000 network and recognized as an Important Bird Area. Tracks and walkways give access to lagoon, reedbed, dune, beach, farmland, scrub and adjoining pine or riparian woodland.
The Douro Estuary reserve covers about 66 hectares near Vila Nova de Gaia, where salt marsh, tidal mudflats, dunes and exposed sand bars attract waders, herons, gulls and terns. Boardwalks and two observation hides provide viewpoints over the marsh, sea and mudflats. The route can also include the riverfront at Foz for common shorebirds, gulls, terns and seasonal coastal birds.
Breeding or seasonal possibilities around the wider circuit include Little Bittern, Purple Heron, Water Rail, Kentish Plover, Iberian Chiffchaff, Savi’s Warbler, Western Yellow Wagtail, Common Reed Bunting, Ruddy Turnstone and Purple Sandpiper. The private tour is available as a half day or full day, with the mix of sites adjusted to season and tide.
