About this tour
A little over 30 minutes from Lisbon, the Sado Estuary protects a broad mosaic of wetlands and woodland. Two Special Protection Areas and a natural reserve together cover about 23,000 hectares, and the estuary is also recognized as a Ramsar wetland. Tidal flats and open water meet marsh, reed and rice-growing areas, while dunes, river beaches, small dams and Cork Oak or Stone Pine woods add further variety.
The reserve’s bird list contains more than 250 species. Ducks, waders, gulls and terns are prominent. Red-breasted Merganser and Black-necked Grebe are among the aquatic possibilities, while Eurasian Oystercatcher and Caspian Tern use the estuarine habitats. Elsewhere the day may reveal Greater Flamingo or Eurasian Spoonbill, alongside Mediterranean birds such as Iberian Magpie, Iberian Grey Shrike, Eurasian Hoopoe and European Bee-eater. Winter concentrates aquatic birds, migration increases diversity, and summer brings a substantial breeding community.
This private outing is available as a half day or full day. The itinerary follows current conditions across the estuary rather than promising a fixed sequence. Bottlenose Dolphins live in the area and are sometimes seen, but any encounter is incidental and cannot be assured.
