About this tour

Cross southeastern Romania on a small-group expedition that links mountain forest, open steppe, river delta and Black Sea wetlands. The route begins in the Carpathians, where guided walks explore the wooded valleys and limestone scenery of Piatra Craiului, then moves east to the Danube Delta before finishing among the dry hills and coastal lagoons of Dobrogea.

Birding is central throughout the journey. Mountain days bring chances to work mature forest for woodpeckers, owls and Wallcreeper, while the delta section uses a motorboat to reach reed beds, channels and breeding colonies. Pelicans, herons, warblers, kingfishers and marsh harriers are among the possibilities there. The final stage adds raptors, woodland species and waders around the Macin Mountains, Babadag Forest, Histria and the Black Sea coast.

The program also includes two evening visits to a forest hide for brown-bear observation and photography. All wildlife remains wild, so no individual sighting can be guaranteed. The pace combines full field days, road transfers, easy walks and three days of boat-based exploration.

The listed price is per person sharing for the scheduled June 2027 departure. It covers the stated accommodation, meals, ground transport, local guiding, boat travel, bear-hide access and Danube Delta entry.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival in Bucharest and transfer to the Carpathians
Bucharest

Meet the group at Bucharest International Airport and transfer to the Predelut area. Settle into the first guesthouse and gather for a welcome dinner overlooking the Bran Castle landscape.

Day 2
Zarnesti Gorges and the first bear hide
Piatra Craiului National Park

Explore the Zarnesti Gorges and a traditional forest track through spruce, fir and beech habitat. Look for mountain and woodland birds, study signs of large mammals, then spend the evening in a hide where brown bears may approach the forest clearing.

Day 3
Forest edges, meadows and an evening hide
Piatra Craiului National Park

Walk the forest edge and meadows near Coltul Chiliilor, concentrating on owls, woodpeckers, Nutcracker and mixed passerines. Return to the bear hide later in the day for a second observation and photography session.

Day 4
Across Romania to the Danube Delta
Danube Delta

Leave the Carpathians and cross the lower country toward Dobrogea. Reach Tulcea, the gateway to the Danube Delta, and prepare for the next three days on its waterways.

Day 5
Delta channels and pelican colonies
Danube Delta

Begin exploring by motorboat, working narrow channels, reed beds and open lakes for pelicans, cormorants, egrets, herons and reed-dwelling warblers.

Day 6
Wetland birding by boat
Danube Delta

Continue through the delta as local conditions guide the route. Watch for kingfishers, penduline tits, Little Bittern and feeding raptors while moving between willow forest, lagoons and reed margins.

Day 7
Letea Forest and the wider delta
Danube Delta

Use the final delta day to broaden the habitat mix, with a planned visit toward Letea Forest and further birding along the waterways. Mammals, reptiles and flowering plants complement the wetland bird activity.

Day 8
Parches viewpoint and Macin Mountains
Dobrogea and Black Sea Coast

Leave Tulcea for the Dobrogea region. Scan over the delta from Parches, then continue to the Macin Mountains for raptors, wheatears, buntings and hoopoes before settling into the next guesthouse.

Day 9
Babadag, Histria and the Black Sea
Dobrogea and Black Sea Coast

Travel south through Babadag Forest and the Razim-Sinoe lagoon system. Explore the salt marsh at Histria for herons, ducks, warblers, pelicans and a changing selection of waders, then include time along the Black Sea coast.

Day 10
Return to Bucharest
Bucharest

Leave Dobrogea early for the drive back to Bucharest. The expedition ends with a scheduled airport drop-off after the final road transfer.
