About this tour
Lake Cerknica is an intermittent karst lake rather than a predictable patch of permanent water. Its shoreline, open lakebed, streams, wet meadows, scrub and nearby forest change as water rises or drains away. Biologist and licensed nature guide Paul Veenvliet therefore plans this private six-hour outing as a nature and bird search: the route follows the habitat that looks most promising on the actual day.
The excursion normally runs from 09:00 until about 15:00 and is reserved for one family or private group of up to six guests. A high-water visit can place more emphasis on wetland birds; falling water may shift attention to exposed margins, farmland or scrub; forest edges and the surrounding karst add raptors, woodland birds, plants and other wildlife. These are possibilities, not a checklist promise, and Paul explains how water level, weather and season influence what can realistically be found.
Beginning in 2027, guests meet in the Lake Cerknica area. Paul provides local transport in his car when the booking is for one or two people; a party of at least three supplies its own vehicle. The standard guiding price is EUR 115 for one guest or EUR 80 per person for two to six guests; children under twelve pay no tour fee. A locally prepared picnic is optional at EUR 15 per adult and EUR 10 per child rather than included in the base price.
Outings normally run from March to October. A winter date may be possible when forest roads and weather are suitable, but conditions are checked before confirmation. English is the main guiding language, with Dutch, German and Slovenian also available. The precise meeting instructions, vehicle plan, picnic choice and any mobility considerations are agreed after inquiry.

Day 1
Following Lake Cerknica’s current conditions
Meet at Lake Cerknica for an outing of approximately 09:00–15:00. Paul checks water level, weather and seasonal activity before choosing the day’s combination of lake edge, wet meadow, farmland, scrub, forest or other accessible karst habitat. Bird searching is combined with interpretation of the wider landscape, and the pace can be adjusted for the private group.

Are particular bird species guaranteed?
No. Lake levels, weather, season and bird movements are highly variable. Paul chooses the best current habitat, but no species is promised.
Is the picnic included in the base tour price?
No. The picnic is an optional add-on costing EUR 15 per adult or EUR 10 per child under 12.
Can larger groups join?
The standard private group size is one to six guests. Larger groups may be discussed after inquiry.
