This private seven-day programme links several contrasting Slovenian landscapes without treating wildlife as a prearranged checklist. Biologist and licensed guide Paul Veenvliet weighs the group’s interests against season, water levels and weather when setting the daily order. Intermittent karst lakes, Dinaric forest, meadows, dry limestone country, caves, inland cliffs and coastal saltmarsh each reveal a different part of the country’s natural history.
Bird searching remains important throughout the week, but the focus changes with habitat. Lake margins and saltmarsh can draw attention to waterbirds and migration; forest days depend on sound, season and patient observation; meadows and dry karst broaden the search to raptors, farmland birds, flowers and butterflies. The most memorable observation may be a bird or something entirely different, and no named species is promised.
The standard private format is for five to eight guests. Pickup is arranged from Ljubljana Airport or Ljubljana railway station, local travel is by combi-van and the group stays at a farmstay. Home-cooked meals made with products from local ecological farms, private guiding, Slovenian programme transport and entrance fees are included at EUR 200 per person per day/night. Personal expenses and alcoholic drinks are excluded; an optional brown-bear evening is discussed separately when relevant.
A normal field day sets out once breakfast is finished and reaches the farmstay again during the afternoon. An earlier departure or evening session can be added when it materially improves the experience. Some routes involve roughly 5–10 kilometres over rocky or uneven ground, though adaptations can be discussed in advance. The usual season is April to September. English is the main guiding language, with Dutch, German and Slovenian also available; other durations or priorities require a tailored proposal.

Begin with the Notranjska karst, selecting Lake Cerknica viewpoints and other wetland margins for current water levels and weather. Paul interprets the shifting lake system while the group searches patiently for whatever water, farmland and scrub birds are using the area.
Move into the Snežnik–Javorniki forest landscape for a slower day of listening, scanning and reading woodland signs. The exact route reflects season and trail conditions; bird and other wildlife encounters remain unpredictable in this extensive habitat.
Explore flower-rich grassland, hedgerows and traditional agricultural mosaics. May and June can be particularly varied for plants and butterflies, while seasonal birds are searched for without turning the day into a guaranteed list.
Join a guided cave experience at the site chosen for the group and current conditions. This day expands the week beyond surface birding and explains the geology and water processes that shape Slovenia’s karst landscapes.
Work open, rocky habitats and suitable cliff viewpoints for natural-history observations that can include raptors, other birds, flowers and butterflies. Walking distance and terrain are confirmed for the group, and timing is adjusted for heat and weather.
Travel to Slovenian coastal habitats and saltmarsh, with the route selected for season and recent activity. Spring and early autumn can be especially dynamic, but tides, weather and migration determine what is present.
Use the final day for the landscape best matched to current conditions and the group’s remaining interests. Paul may revisit a productive area or introduce another accessible habitat before coordinating the agreed return or departure arrangements.

No. The habitats are representative, but their order and the exact sites change with season, weather, water levels, current wildlife activity and group interests.

No. Paul deliberately avoids promises that changing karst and forest conditions cannot reliably meet.
