Private 10-Day Karoo and Garden Route Birding Circuit

Begin at George Airport and travel toward Calitzdorp, breaking the journey for lunch and a local wine tasting. Reach the first lodge with time for a gentle introductory bird walk. Finish the day with dinner at the lodge.

Take an early wildlife and birding drive with breakfast in the field, then continue by way of Vanwyksdorp. Pause for a picnic and riverside walk in Seweweekspoort before reaching the next reserve. Search again later in the day, with stargazing possible after dinner if the sky and weather cooperate.

Return to the reserve roads during the cool morning period to seek additional Karoo species. Breakfast and lunch are back at the lodge, leaving a quieter middle part of the day. A final afternoon outing uses the changing light before dinner.

Travel through Oudtshoorn and ascend the Swartberg Pass for a dedicated mountain-birding session. After a picnic lunch with views over the range, descend toward Prince Albert. Spend the night in town and have dinner locally.

Leave Prince Albert after breakfast and follow Meiringspoort toward George. Use the waterfall area for an easy final Karoo birding stop. Continue into the George area to complete the first half of the circuit.

Begin the Garden Route programme with lunch followed by an afternoon walk in Afromontane forest. Listen and watch for forest specialists across the canopy and lower growth. Overnight in treetop accommodation surrounded by the forest.

Explore another forest section early, then return to the lodge for breakfast. Shift to the coast when the tide is favourable, looking across beaches and rocky areas for waders, terns and cormorants. Lunch is in Sedgefield before the return to the lodge.

Watch the morning activity from a waterside hide while having a packed breakfast. Add fynbos and bushveld searches, visit Buffels Bay, and then move on to Knysna after lunch. Check in before a sightseeing and birding stop at the Knysna Heads.

An optional early flufftail search is considered only when recent observations and local conditions support it. Continue after breakfast through fynbos and the Knysna Estuary, then spend the afternoon walking and, if weather permits, boating in a protected reserve. A suitable land activity replaces the cruise if conditions are poor.

Enjoy breakfast in Knysna and check out of the guesthouse. Travel to George Airport for the onward connection. The combined circuit finishes at the airport.
