Eastern South Africa Endemics with Lawson's Safaris
Pursue eastern South African endemics over 16 days from KwaZulu-Natal forests and Sani Pass to Wakkerstroom, Kruger and Magoebaskloof.
About this tour
This fast-paced 16-day route is designed for keen birders targeting species endemic or nearly endemic to eastern South Africa. It begins near Umhlanga and links KwaZulu-Natal forests and wetlands with Sani Pass and the Lesotho highlands, Wakkerstroom grasslands, Kruger and Magoebaskloof.
The changing elevations support Drakensberg Rockjumper and Siskin, Gurney’s Sugarbird and other highland birds, while Dlinza, iSimangaliso, Tembe and the northern forests add turacos, twinspots and forest specialists. Kruger contributes open-country birding and wildlife from safari vehicles.

Itinerary ▼
Assemble in the Umhlanga area, with a local overnight recommended before the first morning. This positions the group for the KwaZulu-Natal section.
Bird Dlinza Forest and other KwaZulu-Natal habitats. Forest endemics and regional specialities are the emphasis before moving inland.
Make the signature ascent of Sani Pass. The high-altitude environment provides the principal opportunity for Drakensberg targets across the South Africa-Lesotho border area.
Search the open country around Wakkerstroom. This stage concentrates on grassland birds with restricted or near-restricted South African ranges.
Continue into Kruger National Park and use open-sided vehicles for birding drives. The park adds extensive savanna, raptors and major mammals.
Close the birding in Magoebaskloof’s mistbelt forest. The route then ends in Johannesburg for onward travel.
