Western Doñana is shaped by contrast: the white village of El Rocío stands beside wetlands used by resident, breeding and migrating birds, while sandy streets, dunes and woodland add a very different atmosphere within a compact area.
The habitat mix creates opportunities for many herons and raptors, together with flamingos, ducks, pratincoles, swallows and martins. Mediterranean and wetland songbirds may include Dartford Warbler, Spectacled Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Crested Tit and Golden Oriole, with the balance changing through the seasons.
A small number of sites is selected for the available half-day according to water, weather and recent bird activity. This keeps the outing focused while still showing why western Doñana can reward repeated visits.
