About this tour
The Strait of Gibraltar compresses one of Europe’s great migration routes into the 14 kilometres between Europe and Africa. Mountain viewpoints overlook the meeting of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, with dunes, coves and the Tarifa landscape adding context to the birding.
Spring and late summer into autumn favour soaring migrants: White Storks, Black Kites, Short-toed Eagles, Booted Eagles, Honey Buzzards, hawks, swallows and martins. Later in the year, attention can shift toward shearwaters, gannets, storm petrels and other seabirds. The timing and volume of passage always vary.
The area has a network of 17 observatories. The guide chooses among them according to the day’s wind, because viewpoint selection can determine whether migrants pass overhead or farther along the coast.
