About this tour
This 12-day birding circuit follows Tanzania's coast and eastern mountains, beginning in Dar es Salaam before heading to Pemba, the Indian Ocean and the mainland coast. It is structured around coastal and island birding, an offshore pelagic outing and the forested mountain ranges of the northeast.
After Pemba and the pelagic segment, the route continues through the Usambara Mountains, South Pare and Mkomazi, then travels across the Maasai Steppe toward Arusha. The sequence offers a changing mix of island, shore, marine, forest and dry-country habitats rather than a single-site stay.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Dar es Salaam
Arrive in Dar es Salaam and settle in before the coastal birding route begins.
Day 2
Dar es Salaam to Pemba
Travel from Dar es Salaam to Pemba Island and begin island birding.
Day 3
Pemba Island birding
Spend a full day birding Pemba's island habitats.
Day 4
Pemba and an Indian Ocean pelagic outing
Continue on Pemba before taking the pelagic boat trip in the Indian Ocean.
Day 5
Island birding and the mainland coast
Complete the island birding segment and travel across the Zanzibar–Tanga route toward the mainland coast.
Day 6
Coastal forest and the East Usambaras
Bird the coastal forest area and travel into the East Usambara Mountains.
Day 7
East Usambara Mountains
Use a full day in the East Usambara Mountains for forest birding.
Day 8
West Usambaras and South Pare
Travel through the West Usambara Mountains and continue toward the South Pare range.
