7 Days Uganda Birding: Mabamba, Budongo and Semuliki
1/1

About this tour

This week-long route combines three very different birding settings: papyrus wetland, lowland forest and savanna waterways. It begins near Entebbe with a canoe search for Shoebill at Mabamba, followed by the journey north to Murchison Falls. A northern-bank game drive and a cruise on the Victoria Nile introduce open-country birds and river-margin species.

Budongo’s Royal Mile receives a full birding day, including stops in the Nyabyeya farmland on the approach. Forest kingfishers, Ituri Batis and other understory and canopy birds are the focus. From Masindi, the journey continues to Kibale and Bigodi, adding a wetland walk and the possibility of an optional night outing.

Semuliki is the most intensive walking day. An early departure and packed lunch support an estimated seven to eight hours on the Kirumia Trail, where the forest’s Congo Basin connections are reflected in its birds. The following day changes pace and habitat with a Queen Elizabeth game drive and a cruise on the Kazinga Channel.

The trip returns to Entebbe on day seven, with roadside birding, a lunch stop at Igongo and a stop around Kayabwe/Nabusanke. This is a compact traveling circuit: long drives and sustained forest walks are part of fitting these sites into one week. It is best understood as an active birding itinerary, with target birds sought in suitable habitat and observations dependent on conditions.

Itinerary

Day 1
Mabamba canoe birding, then Murchison Falls
Mabamba Swamp

Meet the bird guide at the Entebbe airport or hotel and continue to Nakiwogo, about ten minutes away, for the canoe journey to Mabamba. Allow two to four hours for the Shoebill search and other wetland birds such as Papyrus Gonolek and Lesser Jacana. Travel north through Luwero with birding stops, then pass through Kaniyo Pabidi on the approach to the park. Overnight at Bamboo Village Lodge, with meals included and drinks extra.

Day 2
Savanna game drive and a Victoria Nile cruise
Murchison Falls National Park

Explore the northern bank for birds and mammals, crossing from the southern side if required by the overnight location. After a picnic lunch, take the boat upstream toward the falls, watching for Goliath Heron, kingfishers and Red-throated Bee-eater along the roughly 17-kilometer stretch. Visit the top of the falls as part of the park program. Stay at Masindi Hotel; meals are included and drinks excluded.

Day 3
Nyabyeya and Budongo’s Royal Mile
Royal Mile, Budongo Forest

Leave early for the Royal Mile, stopping in Nyabyeya farmland to look for finches, buntings and grassland birds. Continue into Budongo for Ituri Batis, Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, Blue-throated Roller and other forest specialists. The full forest day may also bring monkey or chimpanzee encounters. Return to Masindi Hotel for dinner and the night.

Day 4
Kibale and the Bigodi wetlands
Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Transfer to the Kibale area and use the rest of the day around Bigodi. Forest and wetland birding adds opportunities for turacos, barbets, greenbuls and kingfishers, together with primates. A night walk for nocturnal birds and animals is optional.

Day 5
Kirumia Trail in Semuliki
Semuliki National Park

Set out around 6 a.m. with picnic lunches for the roughly one-and-a-half-hour drive toward Semuliki. Plan for seven to eight hours of birding on the Kirumia Trail, searching the lowland forest for hornbills, malimbes, kingfishers and other Congo forest birds. Nkulengu Rail is a particularly elusive possibility. Return to the lodge after the forest day.

Day 6
Queen Elizabeth and Kazinga Channel
Kazinga Channel

Combine a morning game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park with an afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga Channel. The switch from savanna to water offers opportunities for Martial Eagle, African Spoonbill, African Fish Eagle and waders, alongside the park’s mammals. Birding continues through the different habitats encountered during the day.

Day 7
Birding along the return route
Entebbe

Travel back to Entebbe with roadside stops for birds such as Palm-nut Vulture and Lizard Buzzard. Break for lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre and stop in the Kayabwe/Nabusanke area for local crafts. Finish at the international airport for the return flight.
