About this tour

This five-hour birding outing leaves Waikīkī for the forested valleys of Oʻahu’s Koʻolau Mountains. The focus is on the island’s endemic forest birds, including the Oʻahu ʻAmakihi and the endangered Oʻahu ʻElepaio, with time to understand the conservation work shaping their habitat.

Field time combines a gentle walk in lush valley forest with a guide-led search in conditions that can be wet or muddy. The route is designed for birders of all experience levels who are comfortable walking one to two miles on uneven natural surfaces. Transport is provided from selected Waikīkī meeting points.

Group departures run weekly from mid-August through mid-June. The published format accommodates three to eight participants, while a private option is also available. Bird activity varies with season and conditions, so every species remains a possibility rather than a guarantee.
