A six-day Zimbabwe route from Harare wetlands and miombo woodland through Nyanga, Honde Valley, Mutare and the Vumba.
About this tour
Cross an exceptional range of eastern Zimbabwe habitats in six birding days. The route begins around Harare’s vleis and miombo woodland, then continues via Marondera and Gosho Park to the montane country of Nyanga, Mtarazi Falls and Honde Valley.
Forest and wetland sessions around Aberfoyle, Wamba swamp, Katiyo, Mutare and the Vumba seek highly localised Eastern Highlands birds alongside miombo, grassland and migrant species. Begin with crakes, flufftails, longclaws, cisticolas and migrant raptors around Harare, then bird roadside habitat, Marondera and Gosho Park en route toward the Eastern Highlands.
Search montane grassland and forest around Mtarazi Falls before continuing to Honde Valley and Aberfoyle for swifts, twinspots, turacos, Robert’s Warbler and Chirinda Apalis.
Target Anchieta’s Tchagra at Wamba swamp, then explore lowland evergreen forest, Katiyo Tea Estates and the Aberfoyle area.
Use a flexible day to revisit productive forest and wetland sites for missing Eastern Highlands targets.
Bird lower miombo near Mutare, granitic outcrops and the Vumba forests for localised montane species.
Search for Swynnerton’s Robin, Stripe-cheeked Greenbul, crimsonwings, bushshrikes, sunbirds and other remaining targets before returning to Harare.
