Otamendi Grassland Birding Tour
A 6-hour grassland and marsh birding route about one hour from Buenos Aires, focused on Otamendi/Ciervo de los Pantanos habitats.
About this tour
Diego describes Otamendi as an open grassland route about 70 km from downtown Buenos Aires.
The area belongs to the National Parks system and includes short and tall seasonally flooded grassland, reeds, cattail, ditches and patches of native forest.
Most birding is along a public dirt road of about 5 km, alternating walking and careful roadside birding. The route is especially noted as a place to look for Straight-billed Reedhaunter.
Other birds mentioned by Diego include harriers, caracaras, Giant Wood Rail, ibis, Southern Screamer, lapwing, snipe, hummingbird, woodpeckers, reedhaunters, spinetail, antshrike, tyrants, finches, tanagers and blackbirds.
