Abyssinian ground hornbill

Bucorvus abyssinicus

The Abyssinian ground hornbill is a large bird native to the savannas and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. It is known for its striking appearance, with a large black body, long eyelashes, and a bright red throat patch. This bird is a ground-dwelling species, using its powerful bill to forage for a variety of prey including insects, small mammals, and reptiles. Abyssinian ground hornbills are also known for their deep booming calls, which they use to communicate with each other across long distances. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and hunting, this species is facing population declines and is classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
