Altai Snowcock

Tetraogallus altaicus (Gebler, 1836)

Altai Snowcock, Tetraogallus altaicus, is a pheasant relative that breeds in montane parts of far north-east Kazakhstan, south-west Siberia, northern Xinjiang and western and central Mongolia. It was first described by Gebler in 1836. The bird is tied to open mountainsides above the tree line, and its range also reaches the mountain areas of western Mongolia and neighbouring parts of China, Kazakhstan and Russia. It is associated with boreal forest, and the Altai region gave it its scientific name.
