About this tour

This cross-border journey follows a natural corridor from the forests around Seminsky Pass into the high Altai, then across the Mongolian steppe and lake country. The changing landscape is the core of the experience: boreal woodland gives way to open mountain basins, stony slopes, reed-fringed water and semi-desert.

Birding priorities shift with each habitat. Pallas’s Rosefinch and Ural Owl represent the taiga; Altai Snowcock, accentors and mountain finches occupy the uplands; Mongolian Ground Jay, Oriental Plover, Relict Gull and Swan Goose headline the steppe and wetland stages. Raptors and cranes provide further interest throughout the overland route.

The practical demands are substantial. Several nights use staffed tent or yurt camps, road conditions can be slow, and both international border crossings may take hours. In return, the itinerary reaches remote habitats that are difficult to combine independently and allows repeated searches rather than a single brief stop.

Day 1
Arrival journey to Gorno-Altaysk

Travel into the Altai Republic and meet the expedition team. The confirmed arrival window and first transfer are supplied with the final documents.

Taiga birding at Seminsky Pass
Seminsky Pass

Move into conifer forest near the pass and begin with boreal birds. Rosefinches, owls, thrushes, redstarts and nutcrackers are among the realistic priorities.

Day 3
Across the Altai to the Chuya Steppe
Chuya Steppe

Follow the mountain highway through changing forest and open valleys. Stops are selected for cranes, raptors, buntings, wheatears and other birds of rocky steppe.

Day 4
Beltir and high-country slopes
Chuya Steppe

Climb from the broad steppe towards stony mountain habitat, concentrating on snowfinches, accentors and high-elevation raptors while retaining time for open-country birds below.

Day 5
Altai Snowcock country
Chuya Steppe

Use early light for patient scanning in the Tabozhok area. The day is built around Altai Snowcock and supporting alpine species, with routes adjusted to visibility and conditions.

Day 6
Remote lakes and mountain valleys
Chuya Steppe

Explore Kindiiktiikul and the Nariin-Gol valley over two days. Lakes, slopes and river corridors add waterbirds, finches, redstarts and another chance for the high-altitude specialties.

Day 8
Cross into Mongolia
Achit Lake

Allow most of the day for border formalities, then enter semi-desert habitat. Local birding is fitted around the crossing and the position of the first Mongolian camp.

Day 9
Ground jays and Achit Lake
Achit Lake

Search open plains at dawn for Mongolian Ground Jay before moving to Achit Lake. Wetland margins and reed beds can hold dowitchers, gulls, ducks, buntings and reedbed birds.

Day 10
Western Mongolian lake country
Khar-Us Lake

Continue across rough roads to Khar-Us Lake. Two days around freshwater and saline habitats focus on Oriental Plover, Relict Gull, Swan Goose, sandgrouse, larks and steppe raptors.

Day 12
Return toward the Russian border
Chuya Steppe

Begin the long return via Tsagaan Lake and a second border crossing. Birding remains opportunistic around transfer timing, followed by a final search for missed Altai species.

Day 15
Seminsky return and departure
Seminsky Pass

Revisit taiga and pass habitats before returning to Gorno-Altaysk. The expedition ends on day 17 with the airport transfer.
