Barn Swallow

Hirundo rustica

The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is a distinctive passerine bird known for its long, deeply forked tail and bold, acrobatic flight. These birds are renowned for their extensive migrations, traveling between their breeding grounds in North America, Europe, and Asia, and their wintering areas in Central and South America, Africa, and southern Asia. Barn Swallows are often found in open habitats near water, where they feed on flying insects. They construct cup-shaped nests from mud and grass, typically under eaves or other sheltered locations. These birds are highly social and often form large, noisy feeding flocks during migration. The Barn Swallow's striking appearance and remarkable aerial displays make it a beloved and iconic species.
