Black-winged Red Bishop, Euplectes hordeaceus, is a resident breeding bird of Africa, found across western, central, eastern and south-eastern parts of the continent. It lives in open country, especially tall grassland, and is often close to water. The breeding male is scarlet with black on the face, belly and wings, plus a brown tail, and has a thick black bill. It builds a spherical woven nest in tall grass and lays 2–4 eggs. The species is gregarious and feeds on seed, grain and some insects.
