Blue-billed Teal

Spatula hottentota (Eyton, 1838)

Anatidae — Ducks, Geese, Swans

Blue-billed Teal, Spatula hottentota, is a duck in the Anatidae family and the order Anseriformes. It occurs in Africa from Nigeria to Ethiopia and south to South Africa, and it is also found in Madagascar. The species is mostly settled, though it can move in a nomadic way when water conditions change and wetlands dry out. It breeds throughout the year according to rainfall. Nests are placed above water in tree stumps and made with vegetation. Ducklings leave soon after hatching, and the female gives protection and guides them to feeding areas.
