Blue-crowned Chlorophonia, Chlorophonia occipitalis, is a finch in Middle America, breeding from Mexico to Nicaragua. It is a chunky, short-tailed bird with a stubby bill, and the sexes differ. Males show a turquoise-blue crown patch on an otherwise green head, while females have a smaller crown patch and a pale blue collar. The species lives in montane evergreen forest during the breeding season, including cloudforest and pine-oak forest, and uses lower evergreen forest, secondary growth and shaded plantations at other times. It is mainly a fruit-eater and nests in a domed structure placed in bromeliads or other epiphytes.
