Bonaparte's Gull

Chroicocephalus philadelphia

Bonaparte's Gull is a small, graceful gull with a delicate appearance. During the breeding season, it displays a black hood, white underparts, and light gray upperparts. In winter, its hood becomes patchy, and its bill turns black. This gull is known for its buoyant, tern-like flight and its habit of picking insects from the air. It breeds in boreal forests near water, often nesting in trees. Outside the breeding season, it can be found in coastal areas, estuaries, and inland lakes. Bonaparte's Gull is an agile and graceful bird, often seen in small flocks or alone, foraging for food on the wing.
