Brimstone Canary, Crithagra sulphurata, is a finch found in eastern, south-eastern and southern Africa. It is a resident breeder across central and southern parts of the continent, and it is not truly migratory, though it makes seasonal movements. It lives in open country with light tree cover, including hillsides with trees or scrub and forest margins. In South Africa it is mainly coastal, using bush, streamside shrubs, gardens and thick vegetation. It is a small passerine with a heavy, short, conical bill that is very stout at the base, and the sexes are similar, although the male is brighter.
