About this tour

Travel north from Cape Town for a private day that combines the open farmland, seasonal flower country and lagoon habitats of South Africa's west coast. The route typically works through the Darling area before continuing via Yzerfontein to the West Coast National Park, with stops chosen for current bird activity.

Fields and roadside habitats near Darling can hold Cape Clapper Lark, Southern Black Korhaan, Blue Crane, Cape Longclaw, larks, cisticolas and open-country raptors. Tienie Versveld Wildflower Reserve adds a compact patchwork of renosterveld and grassland, while the rocky shore around Yzerfontein may produce African Oystercatcher and coastal cormorants.

The West Coast National Park is the day's major habitat shift. Around the lagoon, seasonal shorebird numbers can be impressive, with possibilities ranging from Curlew Sandpiper, Whimbrel and godwits to plovers, flamingos and other waterbirds. The surrounding strandveld supports Black Harrier, Cape Penduline Tit, Grey Tit and a variety of dry-country birds.

When time allows, the route may extend toward saltworks and more arid country for species such as Cape Long-billed Lark, Sickle-winged Chat, Karoo Scrub Robin and Chestnut-banded Plover. Because tides, season and access strongly influence the best birding, the guide retains flexibility over the exact order and reach of the day.
