Ruddy Turnstone

Arenaria interpres

The Ruddy Turnstone is a small, stocky shorebird with a distinctive pattern of black, white, and rufous plumage. During the breeding season, its plumage is more vibrant, with a rufous head, black and white mottled back, and a white belly. In winter, its plumage becomes more subdued. This species is known for its habit of turning over stones and other objects to uncover small invertebrates. Ruddy Turnstones breed in the Arctic and subarctic regions and migrate south to coastal areas during the non-breeding season. They are highly adaptable and can be found in a variety of coastal habitats, including rocky shores, sandy beaches, and mudflats.
