Quill Lakes Birding Tour from Saskatoon, Moose Jaw or Regina – 2 great options for finding birds at Canada’s largest saline lake
An eight-hour private self-drive tour from Saskatoon to the Quill Lakes, focused on waterbirds and seasonal shorebird concentrations around the saline-lake system.
About this tour
Travel east from Saskatoon to birding sites on the south side of the Quill Lakes Important Bird Area. Herons, egrets, ducks, grebes, pelicans and other waterbirds use the lake system, while the mix of migrating shorebirds changes markedly between spring and late summer.
The guide selects roadside stops for current water levels and bird activity and provides a spotting scope for distant views. Particular species and concentrations are never guaranteed, and timing within the April-to-September season strongly influences what may be present.
The private core tour lasts eight hours and covers an estimated 450 kilometres return from Saskatoon. It is an easy self-drive outing with frequent roadside stops, and many observations can be made from the vehicle. An optional three-hour evening extension can be discussed separately.
