Sand Martin
Riparia riparia
The Sand Martin (Riparia riparia) is a small migratory bird belonging to the swallow family. It has brown upperparts, white underparts, and a distinctive brown band across its chest. Sand Martins are known for their habit of nesting in colonies in burrows dug into sandy cliffs or riverbanks. They are agile flyers, catching insects on the wing with their wide beaks. These birds migrate long distances, spending the breeding season in temperate regions of Europe and Asia, and wintering in Africa. Sand Martins are highly social birds, often seen in large flocks near water bodies where they forage for insects.
