Riparia riparia (Linnaeus, 1758)

Sand Martin, Riparia riparia, is a widespread breeding bird of open country across the world, and it nests in sandy or gravelly ground near larger waters such as rivers, lakes and the sea. It is a swallow with a brown upper side, white underparts and a narrow brown breast band, which helps to set it apart from similar birds. It makes its nest at the end of burrows dug into banks, often in close colonies, and the young are raised in a chamber lined with straw and feathers.
