Large-billed Lark

Galerida magnirostris (Stephens, 1826)

Large-billed Lark, Galerida magnirostris, is a resident breeder in southern Africa, including southern South Africa, Lesotho and southernmost Namibia. It belongs to the lark family and is a passerine. Its most notable feature is its heavy two-toned bill, with a yellow base to the lower mandible, which sets it apart from other African larks. It occurs in fynbos, karoo scrub and mountain grassland, and also uses cultivated and fallow farmland. It nests on the ground and feeds on seeds and insects, with insects taken especially during the breeding season.
