Tahiti Crake

Zapornia nigra (Miller, JF, 1784)

Tahiti Crake, Zapornia nigra, was a rail from Tahiti in the Society Islands of eastern Polynesia. It belonged to the family Rallidae and was described by Miller in 1784. The bird was confined to Tahiti, where it was recorded and illustrated during the second Cook voyage. Miller later used a version of that image in his 1784 publication and gave it the scientific name Rallus nigra. It is now extinct.
