Chrysocolaptes lucidus

The Buff-spotted Flameback, scientifically known as Chrysocolaptes lucidus, is a striking woodpecker species found in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. This medium-sized bird is characterized by its vibrant plumage, with a black and white patterned back, a bright red crown, and distinctive buff-colored spots on its wings. The Buff-spotted Flameback primarily inhabits wooded areas, including tropical and subtropical forests, as well as open woodlands. It is an adept climber and forager, using its strong bill to peck at tree trunks in search of insects and larvae. This species plays a vital role in its ecosystem by contributing to the maintenance of tree health through its foraging activities. While the conservation status of the Buff-spotted Flameback is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, ongoing habitat loss and degradation pose potential threats to its populations.
