Chinese Pond Heron

Ardeola bacchus

The Chinese Pond Heron is a small heron species found in East Asia. During the breeding season, the adult male dons a striking plumage with a mix of blue, white, and chestnut colors, while the female and non-breeding adults have a more subdued appearance. This species is known for its stealthy hunting behavior, often seen wading in shallow waters to catch fish, amphibians, and insects. Chinese Pond Herons are migratory birds, breeding in wetlands and rice fields and wintering in coastal areas and estuaries. Their populations are currently stable, but they face threats from habitat loss and pollution.
