Common Poorwill

Phalaenoptilus nuttallii

The Common Poorwill (Phalaenoptilus nuttallii) is a nocturnal bird found in western North America. It is known for its unique habit of entering a state of torpor, similar to hibernation, during the winter months. This small, cryptically colored bird has a mottled brown and gray plumage, with a distinctive white band across its throat. It is often found in arid and semi-arid habitats, including open woodlands, scrublands, and rocky areas. Common Poorwills are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of nocturnal insects. Due to their secretive and nocturnal nature, they are not often seen during the day. Their conservation status is of Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List.
