Common Potoo

Nyctibius griseus

The Common Potoo, scientifically known as Nyctibius griseus, is a nocturnal bird found in Central and South America. It is known for its cryptic plumage and large, golden eyes. With a mottled gray and brown plumage, the Common Potoo is well-camouflaged during the day, resembling a broken tree branch. This species is a master of disguise, using its unique appearance to blend into its surroundings and avoid detection by predators. Common Potoos are skilled hunters, capturing insects in mid-air using their wide, gaping mouths. They are also known for their haunting, otherworldly calls that echo through the night in their forest habitats.
