Dark-backed Wood Quail, Odontophorus melanonotus, is a New World quail of the Andes in south-west Colombia and north-west Ecuador. It was described by Gould in 1861 and belongs to the family Odontophoridae. Its range runs through southern Colombia’s Nariño Department to Cotopaxi Province in Ecuador. The bird is linked to primary and secondary tropical forest between 1,100 and 2,200 m. It is mostly ground-dwelling, though it also spends the night in trees. It is part of the chestnut wood quail complex and is treated as a single form.
