Dolphin Gull
Leucophaeus scoresbii (Traill, 1823)
Laridae — Gulls, Terns, Skimmers
Dolphin Gull, Leucophaeus scoresbii, is a gull of coastal southern Chile and Argentina, from central and southern Chile and Argentina to Tierra del Fuego, as well as the Falkland Islands. Some birds also move north along the coast outside the breeding season. It is linked to rocky, muddy and sandy shores, and is often seen near seabird colonies. Its grey plumage is darker on the wings. The scientific name Leucophaeus scoresbii honours the English explorer William Scoresby, and the older name Scoresby’s gull refers to him too.
