Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Eurasian Chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs, breeds across the Palearctic from western Europe to Iran and Turkmenistan. It is a finch in the family Fringillidae and is a common, widespread small passerine. The male has a blue-grey cap and rust-red underparts, while the female is less striking. Both sexes show two white wing bars and white edges to the tail. The male sings from open perches and has a strong voice. The female makes a deep cup nest in a tree fork. Outside the breeding season, chaffinches gather in flocks in open countryside.
