Eurasian Dotterel

Eudromias morinellus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Eurasian Dotterel, Eudromias morinellus, breeds across the high Arctic coastal tundra and alpine zones of temperate Europe and Asia, with its range reaching the British Isles, Scandinavia, north-west Russia, Novaya Zemlya, the New Siberian Islands, north-east Siberia, western Alaska, the Pyrenees, Alps, Carpathians, Altai, Mongolia and far northern Xinjiang. In the non-breeding season it moves to north-east Iberia, North Africa and the Middle East as far as south-east Iraq and the eastern Arabian Peninsula. It is a small wader in the plover family and the only species in Eudromias. It has a brown-and-black-streaked plumage, a broad white eye stripe and an orange-red breast band in breeding dress.
