European Green Woodpecker, Picus viridis, breeds in the western Palearctic and is a member of the woodpecker family. It is a resident bird across much of Europe and the western Palearctic, with Spain and Portugal occupied by the similar Iberian green woodpecker. Also called the yaffle, and sometimes nickle, it is marked by a bright red crown and a black moustache. Males show a red centre on the moustache stripe, while females do not. It usually feeds on ants on the ground and rarely drums on trees.
