Golden-cheeked Woodpecker, Melanerpes chrysogenys, is a woodpecker of western Mexico, where it is found in Middle America. It is a resident bird and breeds in the west of the country. Its range runs through mesophytic and drier forest, as well as more open country with scattered trees and plantations. It is notable for the head pattern of the adult sexes, with males and females differing there while sharing the same general plumage. The species was described by Vigors in 1839 and has two recognised subspecies.
